EMERGENCY OVERVIEW

Appearance: white to gray white. Warning! Harmful if swallowed. Causes eye and skin irritation. May cause kidney damage. May cause cardiac disturbances. May cause lung damage. May cause adverse reproductive effects based upon animal studies. Causes respiratory tract irritation.
Target Organs: Heart, liver, gastrointestinal system, muscles.

Potential Health Effects
Eye: Causes eye irritation.
Skin: Causes skin irritation.
Ingestion: Causes gastrointestinal irritation with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. May cause liver damage. May cause cardiac disturbances. May cause adverse effects of the musculature. Human fatalities have been reported from acute poisoning.
Inhalation: May cause respiratory tract irritation. May cause lung damage.
Chronic: Prolonged or repeated skin contact may cause dermatitis. Adverse reproductive effects have been reported in animals.

Section 4 - First Aid Measures

Eyes: Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid.
Skin: Get medical aid if irritation develops or persists. Rinse area with large amounts of water for at least 15 minutes. Remove contaminated clothing and shoes.
Ingestion: Do NOT induce vomiting. If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water. Get medical aid immediately.
Inhalation: Get medical aid immediately. Remove from exposure to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Do NOT use mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. If breathing has ceased apply artificial respiration using oxygen and a suitable mechanical device such as a bag and a mask.
Notes to Physician: Treat symptomatically and supportively.

Section 5 - Fire Fighting Measures

General Information: As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective gear. During a fire, irritating and highly toxic gases may be generated by thermal decomposition or combustion.
Extinguishing Media: Substance is noncombustible; use agent most appropriate to extinguish surrounding fire.

Section 6 - Accidental Release Measures

General Information: Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated in Section 8.
Spills/Leaks: Clean up spills immediately, observing precautions in the Protective Equipment section. Sweep up, then place into a suitable container for disposal. Avoid generating dusty conditions. Provide ventilation.

Section 7 - Handling and Storage

Handling: Wash thoroughly after handling. Use only in a well-ventilated area. Minimize dust generation and accumulation. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Avoid breathing dust.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from incompatible substances. Keep containers tightly closed.

Section 8 - Exposure Controls, Personal Protection

Engineering Controls: Facilities storing or utilizing this material should be equipped with an eyewash facility and a safety shower. Use adequate general or local exhaust ventilation to keep airborne concentrations below the permissible exposure limits.

Section 12 - Ecological Information

Ecotoxicity: No data available. No information available.
Environmental: Marine animals concentrate the element 7-100 times, and marine plants 1000 times from seawater. ... Soybeans and tomatoes also accumulate soil barium 2-20 times. Adsorption of barium was measured in a sandy soil and a sandy loam soil at concn levels closely corresponding to those to be expected for field conditions. In general, sludge solutions appeared to incr the mobility of elements in a soil. This is due to a combination of complexation by dissolved organic cmpd, high background concn and high ionic strengths of the soil solution.
Physical: No information available.
Other: For more information, see "HANDBOOK OF ENVIRONMENTAL FATE AND EXPOSURE DATA."

Section 13 - Disposal Considerations

Chemical waste generators must determine whether a discarded chemical is classified as a hazardous waste. US EPA guidelines for the classification determination are listed in 40 CFR Parts 261.3.
